#howto… manage your #iPhone photo storage

How to...logo_smallApple make it really simple to use the cloud to store our photos. Once iCloud is set up on your Apple ID, any picture you take on your iPhone or iPad is synchronized via the cloud and appears on all your other connected devices, including your Mac. Apple’s iCloud

iPhone photo size

Now that Apple makes great cameras in their iOS devices, a typical photo can take up between 3-9 MB without the Live or HDR enhancements, or any filters.

So if you have a 32GB iPhone 7 and your photos are an average 5MB in size then that’s 6400 photos without any other memory uses.

Video storage is a whole other issue!

Managing your memory space on your iPhone now becomes something to build in to your life and all of a sudden the simplicity of a synchronized iCloud library is not so appealing.

Space saving solution

Apple, being Apple, thought of this challenge and provide a feature called “Optimize iPhone storage.”

With Optimize Storage, smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud.

In order to activate this space saving feature:

  1. Settings / [your name] / iCloud / Photos
  2. Turn on iCloud Photo Library
  3. Select Optimize iPhone Storage to make more space on your device

Once in place you can store as many photos and videos as you have space in iCloud.
