Batch change #mac file permissions


There are (frustrating) times when managing files, such as when copying or moving files between different user computers, that these files can become locked and can result not being able to open or edit the files on the destination computer. Changing the file permissions is sometimes a solution to removing these restrictions. The following process describes how to do this for multiples files.


  1. Select the disk or folder with the files, and then click “Get Info.” If the Sharing and Permissions option doesn’t display, click the drop down triangle to make it visible.
  2. Click the lock icon, and then enter your username and password.
  3. Click the username or group name you want to give, edit or deny permissions.
  4. Click the level of permissions you want that user or group to have in the pop-up window.
  5. Click the gear icon, and then click “Apply to Enclosed Items.


Changing permissions on large numbers of files can take time depending on the performance of the computer and the speed of the hard drive.
